Best Crime Documentaries to Binge

best crime and mystery documentaries

Do you spend your Sundays curled up on the couch, binge watching crime documentaries… or are you normal? Don’t feel like you need to answer that. 🙂

It’s my opinion that mystery and crime documentaries are the best way to stay busy when you don’t have any hobbies.

Unsolved Crime and Mystery Documentaries

Channel your inner detective with these unsolved murders and mysteries that may or may not keep you up night. If there’s one thing we can all agree on regarding crime documentaries, it’s that you don’t know everything… or anyone.

Missing 411: The Hunted

This documentary focuses on a series of hunters who have gone missing in national parks over the years. This one stuck with me because hunters are people who are familiar with the outdoors or are well equipped for survival. So why are these older men going missing? Over several decades? And why is the FBI involved?

The Disappearance of Maura Murray

The only American story where the nosy neighbors couldn’t save the day. This is the story of Maura Murray, who disappeared on the evening of February 9, 2004, after a car crash on Route 112 near Woodsville, New Hampshire. Her whereabouts remain unknown and something doesn’t seem right about her family… more specifically her dad.

The Case Against Adnan Syed

The 1999 murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee, and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, were brought to attention by the Serial podcast. But there is more to the story.

Three Identical Strangers

Three Identical Strangers starts slow and unpredictable but ends with an unimaginable secret with radical repercussions. “The upper becomes a thriller, with one shocking revelation after another of the hidden forces that shaped, and distorted, the lives of Robert Shafran, Edward Galland, and David Kellman.

Where do you stand in the Nature vs Nurture debate? How far would you go to test it?

Who Killed Garrett Phillips

On October 24, 2011, 12-year-old Garrett Phillips was murdered in his home in Potsdam, New York. Police quickly suspected Oral “Nick” Hilary, who was a soccer coach at Clarkson University and the ex-boyfriend of Garrett’s mother, Tandy Cyrus.

After watching this documentary I was struck by how little information there is about the boy who died. There are several missing pieces to this compelling and heartbreaking story. The injustice not only of Garrett but also a black man accused of murdering him without any evidence.

There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane

“Eight people were killed when a minivan drove by 36-year-old Diane Schuler, after traveling 1.7 miles in the wrong direction on the parkway, collided head-on with an oncoming SUV. Toxicology tests conducted by the medical examiner revealed that Schuler was heavily intoxicated with both alcohol and marijuana at the time of the crash. Schuler’s husband, Daniel, has consistently denied that she used drugs or alcohol…”

This is one of those documentaries you keep wanting to get better, but it only leaves you with more questions.

The Staircase

The staircase dives into the case of Michael Peterson, an author who was convicted in 2003 of murdering his wife, Kathleen Peterson after she was found unconscious at what appeared to be a fall down the stairs. The story doesn’t stick once the medical examiner determined that she had been beaten with a weapon.

Was this an accident or a murder?
