Cheers to 2026

cheers to 2026

2026? That doesn’t even sound real. Yet, here we are. 3 days in.

I spent the first couple of days researching New Year’s traditions. It’s so interesting how different cultures ring in the new year – from the food you consume (and what not to consume), to the color of your underwear – there is quite a range of superstition. I’ve enjoyed learning what people around the world do to celebrate, but also those in my outer circles. Another hot topic, of course, is – what’s your New Year’s resolution? And it seems that many of us are moving in the same direction this year.

What’s the word?

Word on the street is – we’re going back to basics.

Of course, there’s the slew of resolutions centered on getting back in shape and going to the gym. But something I’ve been hearing a lot of this year is how to prioritize health in other ways.

Dressing the Part

If you’re part of the remote working community, you’ve probably been saying (for way too long now) how you want to dress better and invest more in your appearance. With an overall decline in formality in the last few years, it’s not surprising that others want to pick up on their appearance as well.

It wasn’t just looking the part, though. Non-synthetic fabrics are in demand.

There’s chatter about the studies’ findings on the harm caused by polyester and other synthetic fabrics. Ranging from fertility and skin sensitivity, all the way to pollution. Linen, bamboo, wool, and organic cotton are trending this year, and for all the right reasons. People are not only wanting to be more fashionable, but the focus is on the threads (literally).

Whole Foods

This always feels so surreal to talk about. Because what the hell is actually in our food?

People are chronically inflamed, rarely getting their nutrients, and cancer isn’t really even an if, but a when, thanks to the garbage the FDA approves as food.

I think we’re all a little tired of feeling so tired. The apple that sits on your counter for 5 weeks without browning has lost its novelty. People want to focus on quality ingredients and whole foods – either to get ahead of illness, or to counter symptoms they’re already experiencing.

Re-Assessing Screen Time

Or all free time, for that matter. Kinda crazy how they’re often one and the same. I’ve heard many mentions of cutting back on screen time. While some are motivated by health concerns (memory, attention span), others are itching to get back to neglected hobbies.

The tricky part of the second one, however, is that many use TikTok/Instagram/YouTube for their hobbies. Wish ’em luck navigating those rocky waters!

I deleted my Facebook profile in early 2025 and honestly never looked back – okay, so I do miss Marketplace. However, I have deleted Instagram and TikTok from my phone, and it’s actually crazy how often I go to check them, like it’s muscle memory.

Our parents were right – it really is these damn phones.

2026 Resolutions

While there’s a variety, it was interesting to hear how often I heard the same resolutions. I hope that 2026 is the year we go back to basics.

In addition to the food and clothing, I’ve also heard that even the materials in your home can affect your mental health. They say homes with an abundance of real materials (wood, stone) report tenants feeling more grounded as opposed to homes filled with plastic. This is a change I would love to see – this year I’m making an effort to only bring quality items into my home, whether food, clothes, decorations, or furniture.
