Pls Use Your Noggin

Data centers are being built in a massive wave primarily to fuel the explosive growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, video streaming, and digital services. Traditional websites only need basic file storage, but training and running modern AI models require specialized high-power hardware, vast amounts of electricity, and heavy cooling systems (Forbes).

Surely, you’re aware of the data centers being built left and right. Maybe you’ve been affected by skyrocketing utility bills, loss of green space, or pollution. Maybe you haven’t been impacted at all. And that’s great – however, that likely will not remain.

Water Usage

Did you know: it takes up to 1 gallon of water each time you send a prompt in ChatGPT? Including the “thanks!” – a whole new meaning to mind your manners.

Listen, I love the frenchie surfing videos as much as anyone – but think of how much water is wasted daily on literal nonsense. People are using AI for everything – altering images, work, therapy, planning, “art”, guidance… you name it.

And I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but things are drying up. The Rio Grande is drying up, rivers are at an all-time low all over the globe… do we really think this is the best use of our water? Data centers require millions of gallons of water per day.

Pollution

Remember earlier when I noted it may not be impacting you yet?

A farmer in Texas recently reported the rise of stillborn calves since the nearest data center went up. Aside from the impact these developments have on wildlife, they’re bound to affect all species as the resources become tainted.

(There is also an argument to be made about the “hum” surrounding data centers, though I don’t know enough to speak of it.)

Like all matters surrounding pollution – even if it doesn’t directly impact you, it’s important to consider future generations. What quality of life would you like for your children? Grandchildren? We are making a big ol mess here.

Moderation

Yeah, AI is super convenient. And in many cases, there is a lot of pressure to use it, whether it’s from your job or whatever. It’s becoming increasingly difficult when it’s built into programs we’re all utilizing already, but even cutting down on the AI platforms themselves goes a long way.

If you need to use it, like all things, moderation is key.

I beg you to please use your noggin.
