Random Things I Miss Living in a Small Town

From a population of 600 to the 11th largest city in the US, there are so many random things I miss about living in a small town.

Auto Services

I was so spoiled with my car services growing up. There was one place for collisions (yeah – I’ve been a time or two), then another for oil, tires, and all things maintenance. It was much easier to determine where to go when the options were limited. For maintenance, I used to get my oil changed, and it would include filling my windshield fluid, rotating my tires, and brake fluid – and the best part, they’d vacuum my car.

I’m sure there are places like this that exist in cities, but I have yet to find them. There are hundreds of places to drive in and get your oil changed – but they’re not checking anything else, and they’re certainly not going to vacuum. Most importantly and unfortunately, they’re also probably going to try to take advantage of you, which is something that just doesn’t happen when your entire reputation depends on word of mouth, as it does in small-town USA.

Talking to Strangers

I still do this, but it’s not really the norm.

I used to get so embarrassed going anywhere with my grandpa – because he would talk to everyone. About anything. Only to later realize that’s me.

The “who do you know?” game is one of my favorites. It’s a really small world, and conversations with strangers somehow make it feel even smaller.

Not Carrying my ID

It’s become apparent in recent situations that this is… actually a bit of a problem.

But in a small town, it’s not always necessary. You probably went to school with the bartender’s daughter, or the pharmacist knows your mom. Everyone knowing you can be a pain – but it can also be a luxury.

“I’ll be there in 15.”

Saying you’ll be there in 15 and meaning it – because things rarely take any longer.

The Stars

I really took the big sky for granted.

Light pollution (and air pollution) takes a toll on the stars. I miss the giant, bright moon and the thousands and thousands of stars.

Living in a city has numerous benefits – the arts, culture, options – but there are so many random luxuries of living in a small town.
